How ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews actually pick their sources (and how to become one)

Short answer: each AI engine has different citation logic. Perplexity live-crawls and rewards complete answers. ChatGPT recommends entities it can verify across multiple sources. Google AI Overviews quotes passages from pages that already rank. Copilot leans on the Bing index and LinkedIn. Becoming citable means satisfying all four, and it is far more achievable than most businesses think.

We build and run Citeon, a platform that queries these engines daily and records who gets cited for which questions. This article is what that work has taught us, in plain language.

Perplexity: the live librarian

Perplexity searches the web at the moment you ask, reads the results, and answers with numbered citations. That has two consequences.

First, freshness matters: pages with visible publication and update dates get picked over undated ones. Second, completeness wins: Perplexity prefers one page that fully answers the question over three pages with fragments. A self-contained FAQ answer of 40-60 words is the ideal citable unit.

What to do: structure key pages as direct answers, date your content, keep PerplexityBot unblocked in robots.txt, and answer the specific questions your customers actually ask rather than writing broad brochure copy.

ChatGPT: the cautious referee

When ChatGPT recommends businesses, it blends what it learned in training with live search results from the Bing index. Before naming you, it effectively asks: can I verify this business exists, does what it claims, and is regarded well?

That verification runs on entity signals: your name, services and location described consistently on your site, in structured data, on LinkedIn, in directories and in third-party mentions. A business with one orphan website and no footprint elsewhere is a risk ChatGPT will not take; a business corroborated in five places is a safe recommendation.

What to do: complete Organization and Service schema, a LinkedIn company page that matches your site exactly, listings on the directories of your industry, and being indexed in Bing (many sites forget Bing entirely, which also removes them from ChatGPT search and Copilot at once).

Google AI Overviews: the quoting editor

AI Overviews sit on top of ordinary Google ranking. If your page cannot rank at all, it will not be quoted. But among ranking pages, the Overview picks the clearest passage: a sentence or two that answers the question without needing context.

This is why classic technical SEO remains the entry ticket, and why passage-level writing is the new skill: every important claim on your page should survive being lifted out and quoted alone.

What to do: keep your technical SEO healthy, then edit key pages so each section opens with a quotable, complete answer before elaborating.

Copilot: the underrated B2B channel

Microsoft Copilot answers from the Bing index and weighs Microsoft’s own graph, where LinkedIn is king. For business-to-business queries, especially in the Netherlands where Bing desktop share is meaningful, an active LinkedIn company page plus clean business schema does disproportionate work.

What to do: verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, enable IndexNow, and treat your LinkedIn page as seriously as your website.

The pattern behind all four

Strip the differences away and one pattern remains: AI engines cite what they can trust and extract. Trust comes from entity consistency and third-party corroboration. Extraction comes from clear, self-contained, dated answers on fast pages. Everything we do in a GEO engagement serves one of those two words.

The encouraging part: because so few businesses do this deliberately, low-competition niches move fast. We have watched a neighborhood focacceria in Den Haag become a ChatGPT recommendation within months of launching a properly structured site. The window where this is easy will not stay open forever.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get my business mentioned by ChatGPT?

Make your business verifiable as an entity: consistent name and details across your site, directories and LinkedIn, structured data on every page, and third-party mentions on platforms AI trusts. ChatGPT recommends what it can corroborate, not what advertises the loudest.

Does Perplexity use Google rankings?

No. Perplexity crawls the web live for each answer and picks pages that answer the question completely in one place, with visible dates and clear structure. A page that ranks poorly on Google can still be cited by Perplexity if it answers better.

What is the fastest way to appear in AI answers?

Target low-competition, specific questions in your niche and answer them in self-contained, 40-60 word passages on fast, crawlable pages. Specific beats broad: AI engines need exactly one good answer to cite you.

Is GEO different from SEO?

GEO builds on SEO. The technical foundation is shared: crawlability, speed, structured data. GEO adds answer-first content, entity building and per-platform tactics, because AI engines cite sources rather than ranking ten blue links.
